Search Engine Optimization
(the foundation of all "Internet Marketing")
Many web designers think about search engine optimization in an
after-the-fact way.
Once a site is built, it takes much more time and money to go back
through and tweak it for good search engine rankings than if it had been
built correctly in the first place.
Worse yet, some web designers rely solely on paid search engine
placement as a "band-aid" for a poorly optimized site. This approach
requires you to pay never-ending fees to search engines.
Content is King
Call it what you want. "Internet Marketing," "Web marketing," "Search
Engine Placement," or whatever else is the latest buzzword for it. The point
is to get visitors to your website. And the #1 way to do that is via search
engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN.
That means your website needs to make use of text, organization, and
technology in a way that simultaneously appeals to both search engines and
people.
Spending time and money on other Internet Marketing activities such as
pay-per-click advertising or a "back link" campaign when your website hasn't
been properly optimized first is the Web version of putting "the cart
before the horse."
Here are a few search engine DON'Ts:
- Don't use frames
- Don't use unwarranted graphics, animation, or Flash
- Don't use graphics/images of text. Use real text.
- Don't rely on paid search engine placement (pay-per-click) for your
rankings - especially if your site is not "search engine friendly" in
the first place
- Don't expect search engine results overnight (they often take
months!)
Note: If you need immediate results, we can also help
you implement paid-placement advertising on search engines. (Once your
site's "natural" search engine placement goes into effect, you'll
usually be able to cancel the paid-placement advertising).
- Don't repeatedly submit your site to the same search engines in
hopes of increasing your ranking
- Don't use automatic submission services
- Don't use "Intro" or "Splash" pages (you know, the ones that you
always click the "Skip Intro" button on anyway)
What SHOULD YOU DO?
- Contact us. If
we build your site from scratch, your site will inherently be search
engine friendly.
- We do not normally charge any ongoing "search engine" or "marketing
fees." In most cases there's no need to perform ongoing work.
- And only on rare occasions do we suggest paid placement or
additional search engine advertising.
- Conduct a proper linking campaign.
